All anyone would tell me, all I would hear, was that I had to go to Cappadocia. Turns out those people were right! The region is INSANE. All the fairy chimneys literally look like a landscape from Mars. All the pigeon holes are also totally trippy. The underground city, though, was the real highlight. If anyone reading this is an Attack on Titan fan - you have to go here. You know why haha... I also really appreciated the skip-the-line tickets. Some of the places had super long lines, and boy, it felt amazing to skip all that.
We all had an amazing time on the tour, mostly thanks to our guide Cemil. He was very entertaining and very easy to speak to, but you still always learned a lot from him. He was even telling stories and teaching us stuff while we were hiking through the valley haha. Plus, he took a bunch of photos of my family in the underground city! I couldn’t figure out how to work the flash. Very nice guy. We also chose the optional pick-up, which was great. They came straight to our hotel, right on time, and we didn’t have to worry about anything.

WALK THROUGH CAPPADOCIA’S OTHERWORLDLY NATURE
After we pick you up, our first stop is Göreme panorama where you can take amazing photos. From here, you’ll have gorgeous views over the town and its surrounding landscape of tall, thin spires. As your guide will explain, they’re called fairy chimneys. They're caused by erosion wearing down the soft tuff rock that’s on the outer layer. Next you’ll visit Pigeon Valley - an area full of dovecotes carved out in the tuff. Since ancient times, pigeons were used for food and fertilizer. As such, the Turks made sure to house them properly. While visiting, you’ll have the opportunity to feed these helpful birds!
DESCEND INTO DERINKUYU, THE UNDERGROUND CITY
The next stop on the Green Tour Cappadocia is a gem store. Learn about Turkey’s beautiful stones, and see the famous zultanite. Depending on the surrounding light, the stone changes color from purple-pink to kiwi-like green! After shopping, you’ll see the world’s largest excavated underground city: Derinkuyu. 85 meters below the surface, this city has 18 levels of narrow tunnels! It was so large it could contain up to 20,000 people. As your guide will tell you, Derinkuyu was built as a safe haven from invaders. The persecuted could stay there for months! However, wandering the dark passageways and low ceilings, it’s hard to imagine staying for more than a day.
DISCOVER ANCIENT HISTORICAL SITES
Ascend from Derinkuyu and travel to Ihlara for lunch. After eating, your guide will lead you through Ihlara Valley, next to the Melendiz River. You’ll come across ancient churches while walking - the valley used to have 60 of them! One highlight is the Church beneath the Tree (Ağaçaltı Church), with its unique red, yellow, and green frescoes. After crossing the valley, you’ll arrive at the Selime Monastery. This astonishing building is 1,300 years old, and is carved into the tuff itself! Plus, it’s so large that it contains a cathedral, a kitchen, and even stables. Finally, visit a shop of traditional Turkish delicacies like coffee and pistachios. After that, the tour ends, and we’ll drop you off where we picked you up.
The magic of nature: how were the fairy chimneys formed?
The famous fairy chimneys were created by volcanic eruptions raining ash. That ash hardened into a porous rock called tuff, which was then covered by basalt. As millennia passed and erosion continued, the softer tuff wore down. However, the basalt stood fast and formed a protective shell. This is why fairy chimneys look the way they do today, with a mushroom-shaped cap.
Since the tuff was so soft, ancient peoples quickly realized an important fact. They could build churches and homes in the rock itself! And so they did. Today, tourists can even sleep in boutique hotels in fairy chimneys!
